Derry (Londonderry per gli Unionisti) Irlanda del Nord, il 30 gennaio del 1972 l'esercito del Regno Unito sparò sulle persone disarmate che partecipavano ad una manifestazione nazionalista contro il Governo di Londra. Morirono 14 civili , e altri 14 furono i feriti. Bono aveva solo 11 anni. Dieci anni dopo scrisse le parole di questa canzone, alla musica contribuì tutto il gruppo degli U2.  Tre mesi prima della pubblicazione dell'album War nel dicembre del 1982, gli U2 a Belfast per la prima volta eseguirono questo brano in pubblico.
